Is Your Website Actually Converting? 7 Quick Checks

Your website looks great - but is it actually doing its job?

Here’s something I see all the time: a beautiful website that’s getting traffic, but barely any enquiries, no bookings, no sign-ups. Crickets.

A good-looking website and a high-converting website are two very different things. And most small business owners don’t realise theirs isn’t pulling its weight until they’ve been wondering “why isn’t this working?” for months.

The good news is, we can fix it! And instead of scrolling instagram for the next 10 minutes, jump onto these 7 quick checks that you can do right now to see whether your website is actually converting - or just sitting there looking pretty.

1. Is your homepage clear within 5 seconds?

When someone lands on your site, they should immediately understand three things: who you are, what you do, and who you help. If your homepage leads with a vague tagline or a stock image with no context, people will bounce before they scroll.

Try this: Open your homepage and pretend you’ve never seen it before. Can you answer those three questions without scrolling? If not, it’s time for a refresh.

2. Do you have a clear call-to-action above the fold?

Above the fold means the part of your page that’s visible before anyone scrolls. This is prime real estate — and it needs a clear, specific CTA. Not just “Learn More” (learn more about what?), but something like “Book a Free Discovery Call” or “Get Your Free Guide.”

Make it obvious. Make it easy. Tell visitors exactly what to do next.

PS: Also check your mobile view to check if this is also the case when viewing on your phone!

3. Is your site mobile-friendly?

Over 60% of website traffic now comes from mobile. If your site doesn’t look great and function smoothly on a phone, you’re losing the majority of your visitors before they even read a word.

Quick test: Pull up your website on your phone right now. Is the text readable? Are buttons easy to tap? Does everything load quickly? If you’re pinching and zooming, your form doesn’t display correctly or your checkout isn’t working, you’ve got a problem!

4. Does your site load in under 3 seconds?

Speed matters more than most people think.

Research consistently shows that if a page takes longer than 3 seconds to load, over half of visitors will leave. You can test your page speed for free using Google’s PageSpeed Insights tool.

Common culprits for slow sites: oversized images, too many plugins, and cheap hosting. All fixable.

5. Is your navigation simple and intuitive?

Your menu should have no more than 5–7 items. Every extra option creates decision fatigue, and confused visitors don’t convert - they leave.

Stick to the essentials - For service based businesses this would be: Home, About, Services, Blog/Resources, Contact.
For an e-commerce business, it gets a little more based on what your shop is, but as a rule of thumb - Shop (or Shop All), Collections/Categories, New Arrivals, Sale/Offers, and About.

That’s it. If someone needs three clicks to figure out what you offer, your navigation is working against you.
PS - you can put more information in your footer with secondary navigation (also helps with SEO!)

6. Do you have social proof visible?

Testimonials, client logos, results snapshots, Google reviews - whatever you’ve got, put it where people can see it. Social proof builds trust instantly, and trust is what turns a curious visitor into a paying client.

Ideally, you want social proof on your homepage, your services page, and near every major CTA.
Don’t bury it on a standalone “Testimonials” page that nobody visits.

7. Is there a clear path from visitor to client?

This is the big one. Your website needs to guide people on a journey: from landing on your site, to understanding your offer, to trusting you, to taking action. Every page should have a logical next step.

If someone reads your About page, where do they go next? If they check out your services, is there an easy way to book a call or enquire? Think of your website as a conversation, not a brochure.
