Meta keeps changing the rules. Here’s what actually matters for your business.
If you're running Meta Ads (or thinking about it), you've probably noticed that things seem to shift constantly. New features, new placements, new "recommended settings" - it can feel like the ground is always moving beneath you.
And honestly? A lot of the changes don't matter as much as people think. But some absolutely do.
Here's my take on the most important algorithm and platform shifts happening on Meta right now — and what they actually mean for your small business.

1. The Andromeda algorithm has changed how targeting works
This is the biggest shift of 2026, and it's one most small business owners haven't heard about yet.
Meta rolled out an algorithm update called Andromeda that fundamentally changed how ads get shown to people. Previously, when you set up your audience targeting — choosing interests, demographics, lookalike audiences — Meta treated those as fairly firm instructions.
Now? Your audience settings are more like suggestions. Andromeda analyses your actual ad creative — the images, the video, the copy — and uses that to decide who should see it. In other words, your creative is now your targeting.
What this means in practice: if your ad features a physiotherapist explaining back pain, Meta's AI will find people interested in that topic regardless of whether you selected "physiotherapy" as an interest. If your ad is a generic stock photo with vague copy, the algorithm has nothing to work with.
2. Advantage+ is on as the default
Meta has been pushing its Advantage+ tools for a while, but in 2026 they've become the default campaign type. Advantage+ campaigns now represent the vast majority of Meta's advertising revenue, and the platform is clearly designed around them.
What does this mean for you? All of the Advantage+ targeting, placements, and budget optimisation is now automatically applied as the default when you create a campaign. Manual targeting is technically still possible - you can switch it on - but it's not straightforward to find, and Meta clearly doesn't want you using it. The entire platform is built around letting the AI handle delivery.
The good news? When your creative is strong, Advantage+ genuinely performs well. We're seeing consistently solid results across our client accounts. The businesses struggling with it are almost always the ones with weak or repetitive creative - the algorithm needs variety to work with.
3. Creative quality is now the number one lever you have
With Andromeda handling the targeting and Advantage+ managing the delivery, the single most important thing you control is your ad creative.
Meta has even introduced a Creative Diversity Score that rates your ad sets as Low, Medium, or High. If your ads are too visually similar, the algorithm can treat them as essentially one ad - which limits how many people it can reach.
What we are finding "good creative" looks like in late 2026:
→ Authentic, founder-led or customer testimonial videos outperform polished (or ai generated) brand content
→ Depending on your ad spend, aim for 4-5 genuinely distinct creative concepts on a lower ad spend (under $50/day) more for if you have a larger ad budget.
→ Mix formats - video, carousel, static image - to give the algorithm options
→ Refresh your creative regularly; check your ad fatigue, algorithm penalises stale content
Meta can now also generate video from your static images and rewrite up to 8 headline variants per ad automatically. Use these with caution - meta’s ai generation has come a long way but still has errors in terms of matching your brand vibe & voice.
4. New placements you should know about
Threads is now a default ad placement as of this month (October 2026). If you're running campaigns, your ads are appearing on Threads unless you actively adjust for it. Early results are mixed - the costs are low but the intent is very different from Instagram feed. Check in on your results (breaking down by placement)- I’ll usually go in and remove the placements that are wasting spend.
Reels & Story placements continue to deliver some of the lowest costs per impression we're seeing. If you're only running static image ads, you're missing out on reach.
One to watch: Meta is testing AI-generated landing pages that appear instead of your actual website for a small percentage of ad clicks. This is worth keeping an eye on, and I’ll come back on this one too after testing, as your standard tracking (Pixel, Google Analytics) may not fire on these pages.
5. The Conversions API matters more than ever
With ongoing privacy changes (iOS updates, cookie restrictions, browser-level tracking prevention) Meta can't track quite as much through the browser as it used to. The Conversions API (CAPI) sends data directly from your server to Meta, filling in the gaps.
If you're running ads and haven't set up CAPI alongside your Meta Pixel, your tracking is probably incomplete.
This is one of those invisible things that makes a big difference. If you're not sure whether yours is set up correctly, it's worth getting someone to check.
6. Don't panic — strategy still wins
Every time Meta rolls out a change, there's a flood of "Are Facebook Ads dead?!" content online. They're not. Meta advertising is still one of the most powerful tools available to small businesses - the platform is generating record revenue precisely because the ads work.
The businesses that succeed are the ones that stay consistent, invest in creative, and focus on fundamentals: strong offer, strong creative, strong landing page, strong follow-up.
Algorithm changes come and go. Good marketing strategy doesn't.
